Resident Evil (Biohazard in Japan) is the first game in the Resident Evil series, first being released in 1996 for the PlayStation, then being ported to the Sega Saturn and PC. Due to its success, there were various remakes on later consoles for the game, and it is always thought of as the game that created the survival horror genre and the
PlayStation's first game to be a big success. The game led to a whole series involving third-person shooting against zombies, the main characters including Chris Redfield, his younger sister, Claire Redfield, his partner, Jill Valentine, Claire's partner, Leon Kennedy, and the main boss in many of the games, Albert Wesker. Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, and Albert Wesker made their first appearance in this game, while Claire and Leon made their first appearance in the sequel, Resident Evil 2.
Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, members of the S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team, are sent to investigate murders with the other members of Alpha Team on the outskirts of Raccoon City after Bravo Team mysteriously disappears. It appears that victims were attacked in their homes with cannibalism. Alpha Team is able to find Bravo Team's fallen copter, with the dead pilot, Kevin Dooley, who's hand, now separated from the rest of his body, is holding a gun. Other than this, Alpha Team can find no sign of Bravo Team. Alpha Team is suddenly attacked by a pack of Cerberus (Doberman dogs that seem to be infected by a deadly virus, now having the intention to kill). During the attack, Joseph Frost, a member of Alpha Team, is killed by one of the animals. Alpha Team decides to run and take refuge in a thought to be abandoned mansion, Chris losing his handgun in the process. There are now only four remaining members: Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Barry Burton, and Albert Wesker. They decide to split up in search of a way out.
Players get to choose from Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine and go on through the journey in the mansion with the chosen character. Throughout the game, you uncover the truth about the abandoned mansion and one of your teammates, shooting down zombies and other infected creatures and other strange experiments. The characters are polygonal 3D figures over 2D pre-rendered backgrounds. Like the game advertises, it would go under the category of survival horror.
