Nintendo is a video game publisher, developer, and hardware manufacture founded in 1889. They have developed and published the most lucrative franchises (Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon) and have created the most popular video game consoles (Nintendo Entertainment System, Wii) and handhelds (Game Boy, Nintendo DS). They are unarguably the best known video game company, and became a household name with the release of Donkey Kong in arcades.

History[]

Appearing in CoroCoro[]

The popular Japanese magazine featured several of Nintendo's games in the 1980's. The popular video game, Super Mario, was featured in every volume since 1981. The other video game under the same creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, was Donkey Kong. The two video games reached popularity as fans read each issue of CoroCoro (spelled COCO with Japanese characters).

Rivialry[]

Many Nintendo fans are familiar with the franchise, Pokémon. It all started as a rivalry between Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Pokémon creator Satoshi Tajiri. All Pokemon fans know the main characters Ash Ketchum (Satoshi) and his rival, Gary Oak (Shigeru Okido). Notice that the two main characters share the name with popular Nintendo designers. Shigeru Miyamoto and Satoshi Tajiri are arch-rivals, thus, Tajiri named the characters after themselves. However, today the two are more likely to work together, though Mario and Pokemon are still rivals.
